چکیده

Modern peer-to-peer file sharing systems rely heavily on the willingness of users to distribute files to others. A selfish user can choose to download a file and consume resources without uploading in return. This form of free-riding plagues all currently deployed peer-to-peer systems. We present a novel protocol for a BitTorrent-like system (i.e., one in which only one file is being shared) that strongly discourages users from downloading a file without sharing it. Our protocol requires very little computation, and can easily be implemented in today’s peer-to-peer systems. It is resistant to all forms of manipulation, including the use of multiple free identities, and does not require any coordination among seeds. We analyze our protocol and show that if downloading peers are rational, a new system equilibrium is reached in which all peers upload at least some percentage of the file they are given.

Distributed Algorithmic Mechanism Design in P2P File-sharing Networks Literature Survey

Distributed peer-to-peer file-sharing systems rely on voluntary contribution of resources (files and bandwidth) from the individual peers. However, individual rationality and self-interest result in free-riding behavior at the expense of collective welfare. Empirical studies have shown this free-riding to be prevalent. To overcome this, filesharing systems have implemented various mechanisms to...

Analysing the Security of Incentive Schemes in P2P-based File-sharing Systems

For Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing services cooperation is essential. However, peers behave rationally and try to maximise their benefits, while minimising their effort. To increase system performance incentive schemes are used to enforce cooperation. Nonetheless, so called free-riders and malicious peers try to attack these incentive schemes. In this paper we will first explain two popular P2...

Understanding and Improving Incentives in Private P2P Communities

Incentive mechanisms play a critical role in P2P systems. Private BitTorrent sites use a novel incentive paradigm, where the sites record upload and download amounts of users and require each user to maintain its upload-to-download ratio above a specified threshold. This paper explores in-depth incentives in private P2P file-sharing systems. Our contributions are threefold. We first conduct a m...

An Analysis of Incentives to Contribute in Collaborative File Sharing Environments

Projects developing infrastructure for the pooling of distributed resources (data, storage, or computation) [1, 2] often assume that resource owners have committed their resources and that the chief task is to integrate and use them efficiently. Such projects frequently ignore the question of whether individual resource owners are willing to share their personal resources for the overall good o...

Multi-level markets and incentives for information goods

The free-rider phenomenon which impedes the marketing of information goods is conventionally countered by copyright protection regulations and technology. Alternative ways to market information goods, in particular through systems based on the super-distribution of a good from buyer to buyer, have recently raised some interest. Some of them mimic peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, while advanc...
